YOUNG REMSEN BUSINESSMAN KILLED

Phillip Rhodes, 25, Remsen, was killed Sunday afternoon (July 23, 1978) in a grinding 3-vehicle crash near Homer, Neb.

He was the owner-operator of Phil’s Repair in Remsen.

Phillip graduated in 1971 from Meriden-Cleghorn high school and had been a mechanic for Feller Auto until last October when he opened his own business.

Dr. Thomas Coriden, Woodbury county medical examiner, said Rhodes, the driver of one of the cars, died of brain laceration.

The medical examiner said Rhodes was taken to Marian Health Center-St. Vincent unit in Sioux City at 4:30 p.m. and was pronounced dead at 4:58 p.m.

Coriden said three passengers in the Rhodes car were also injured.

The medical examiner said the Rhodes car was northbound following a van 2 miles south of Homer on highway 77.

He said another car apparently southbound, went off the road, corrected back onto the road, struck the van in the right rear and then crashed into the Rhodes vehicle.

The medical examiner said the second vehicle apparently left the scene.

The Nebraska highway patrol investigate the accident.

Mr. Rhodes was born March 17, 1953, in LeMars to Richard and Ruth Pick Rhodes. He was a member of the Remsen KC’s, Remsen Junior Chamber of Commerce and Remsen Sportsman’s Club.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s church at Remsen with Rev. Richard Birdsall officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery under the direction of the Fisch Funeral Home.

Rosaries will be recited at 3 and 8 p.m. Tuesday and the KC rosary at 8:30 p.m. all at the funeral home.

Survivors are his mother, Mrs. Ruth Rhodes, Remsen; two brothers, Kenneth and Dean, both at home; two sisters, Mrs. John (Pat) Hodgen, and Mrs. Allan (Pam) Ott, both of Remsen; his paternal grandfather, Thurman Rhodes, and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Erma Pick, both of Remsen, and by two nephews and niece.

He was preceded in death by his father, maternal grandfather and paternal grandmother.
