Harvey Harms, 88, of Sioux Falls, S.D., formerly of rural Hinton, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006, at Sioux Falls, S.D.

Harvey Harms was born March 13, 1918, in rural Brunsville, the son of Henry H. and Anna (Harms) Harms. He attended school near his home. After school Harvey assisted his family with farming. He would later drive a grain truck in the area and work as a diesel mechanic in Sioux City.

On May 12, 1963, Harvey and Avis Stough were united in marriage at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sioux City. They lived in Sioux City for a few years before moving near Lawton. Harvey and Avis later moved to an acreage near Hinton, where they spent the next 35 years. During those years they operated a restaurant in Lawton. Harvey and Avis retired in 1968. The last seven years were spent living close to Avis' daughter Barb Plendl near Sioux City.

Harvey was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sioux City. He enjoyed gardening and canning, as well as fishing with Avis.

He will be remembered by his family, Janet Paulson of Glenwood, Karen Harms of Raleigh, N.C., and Barbara McNutt of Brandon, S.D.; six step-children, Karen and Melvin Berge of Omaha, Neb., Earl and Brenda Stough of Sioux Falls, S.D., Barbara Plendl of Sioux City, Roy and Judy Stough of Sioux Falls, S.D., Gary and Carol Stough of Hinton and Pauline and Paul Hiserote of Sioux City; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother Robert and Gladys Harms of Brunsville; sisters Helen Lehmann of Battle Creek, Carla and Lloyd Schultz of Tehachapi, Calif., and Elenore Breitbarth of Buena Park, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Avis on Feb. 16, 2005; an infant sister Joan; and sisters Jean Wilken, Mae Mertes and Lucille Harms.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 612 Jennings, in Sioux City, with the Rev. Kenny Hsu officiating. Burial followed at St. Peter Cemetery in Brunsville. Visitation began at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. There was also one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral.
