LE MARS WOMAN DIES OF INJURIES
Mary E. Schelin, 77, of 526 12th Ave., SW, died 2 ½ hours after she was thrown out of a car involved in a 2-car accident at 3:31 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Highway 75 and 8th Ave. SW.
Mrs. Schelin was a passenger in a car driven by her husband, Carl G. Schelin, 77, who had minor injuries, LeMars police said.
Mr. and Mrs. Schelin were taken to Floyd Valley Hospital by LeMars Rescue Unit. Mrs. Schelin was later transferred by LeMars ambulance to Marian Health Center in Sioux City where she died at 6:04 p.m.
Cause of death was listed as brain injury, said Dr. Thomas L. Corriden, Woodbury County Medical Examiner.
The fatality is the ninth traffic death in Plymouth County and the second in LeMars this year.
The other driver was Michael Ray Radloff, 23, of Merrill. He was southbound and the Schelins were northbound with both vehicles in the inside lanes of four-lane Highway 75.
Police said both vehicles approached the intersection at approximately the same time and Schelin started to make a left turn onto 8th Ave. SW into the path of Radloff. Radloff escaped injury.
LeMars Police Detective Dennis Folkema said, “I think injuries would have been considerably less with seat belts on.” Mrs. Schelin struck the windshield and the dash, Folkema said.
Damage to Schelin’s 1980 Ford Fairmont was estimated at $3,000. Damage to Radloff’s 1972 Ford LTD was estimated at $500.
-------------------------FUNERAL SATURDAY
Funeral for Mrs. Mary Schelin will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. John’s American Lutheran Church in LeMars with Rev. Tom Lee officiating.
Burial will be in LeMars Memorial Cemetery under the direction of the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home. A prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
The former Mary Howe, she was born Jan. 10, 1908, in Leighton, Iowa, to Lyle and Ida Fliesbach Howe. She married Carl Schelin, March 7, 1932, at Rock Island, Ill., and lived in LeMars since 1937.
Mrs. Schelin was a longtime school teacher at Merrill, retiring in 1973. She was a member of St. John’s American Lutheran Church.
Survivors are her husband, Carl, of LeMars; a daughter, Mrs. Gary (Judy) Schindel of Merrill; a son, James Schelin of Dallas, Tex.; a brother Stearns Howe of Peoria, Ill; seven grandchildren; and a great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Paula, who lost her life in a traffic accident in 1966.
