MERRILL, Iowa -- Arthur J. "Art" Vornbrock, 80, of Merrill died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in Merrill, with the Rev. Robert J. Waters officiating. Graveside services will be at a later date in Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Camp Ripley, Little Falls, Minn. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City.
Mr. Vornbrock was born July 6, 1921, in Mahnomen, Minn., the son of Joseph and Katherine (Dueker) Vornbrock.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from Aug. 26, 1940, to June 16, 1945. He served with the 516th Ordnance Heavy Maintenance Co. (Field Artillery) in Normandy, Northern France, and the Rhineland Campaigns. His awards and decorations include the European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Ribbon, American Defense Service Medal, six Overseas Service Bars, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of the Minnesota National Guard when it was called to active duty.
He married Margaret A. Pinto on Aug. 25, 1947, in Bell Prairie, Minn. He owned and operated De De Beverage in Sioux City with his brothers, Edward and Henry.
He was a member of American Legion Oleson-Halweg Post 125 of Merrill.
Survivors include his wife; children, Thomas, Constance, Ronald, Peter and Paul; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be sent to the Merrill Ambulance Service in Merrill, Iowa.
