AKRON, Iowa -- Gilbert W. Wakeman, 95, of Akron passed away Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at the Hawarden Hospital in Hawarden, Iowa with his family by his side.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron, with the Rev. Laurice Streffeler officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Akron. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.
Mr. Wakeman was born Sept. 11, 1907, the son of George and Dora (Larken) Wakeman. As a young boy, he moved to Mountrail County, N.D. until the age of 19.
He married Helen Hansen on Oct. 1, 1929 in Sioux Falls, S.D. She preceded him in death on July 6, 1989. They farmed in Union County, S.D. until 1951, when they moved to the farm north of Akron.
Mr. Wakeman was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron. In his free time, he loved to hunt, fish and read, and he loved horses and baseball.
Survivors include a son, Gene Wakeman and his wife, Helene, of Hawarden, Iowa; a daughter, Shirley Johnson and her husband, Dareld, of Paullina, Iowa; seven grandsons, Richard Wakeman, Roger Wakeman, Gerald Wakeman, Bruce Wakeman, Loren Wakeman, Jeff Johnson and Scott Johnson; a granddaughter, Pamela Ericson; 13 great-granddaughters; a great-grandson; two step great-grandsons; three step great-granddaughters; two great-great-granddaughters; two step great-great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Lester, Millard, Glenn and Walter and Lloyd Wakeman, as a child; and three sisters, Pearl Johnson, Edith Crammond and one as an infant.
