PAULLINA, Iowa -- Vance V. Van Buskirk, 85, of Bend, Ore., formerly of Paullina and Kingsley, Iowa, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, of medical complications.

Memorial services will be held in Bend. Services in Iowa will be at a later date.

Vance was born July 16, 1916, in Kingsley, where he graduated from high school. He farmed as a young man until joining the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. He served as an airplane mechanic until his discharge in 1944.

He married Ardeth Ehlers of Paullina, Iowa, on Jan. 5, 1946. He lived in Paullina until moving to Bend in January 2000. He was employed as a truck driver, with the Paullina Electric Plant and then with Simonsons as a serviceman. He was also employed with various other trades including an electrican.

He was an active member of Forty and Eight, American Legion and the Lutheran church. He loved fishing, trap shooting and camping. He was always willing to help friends, neighbors and those in need.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis Van Buskirk and Terry Telfer of Bend; four sisters, May Ellen Sadler of Fountain Hills, Ariz., Loy McDermot of Washta, Iowa, Elizabeth Cody of Denver, Colo., and Glee Gustafson of Wakefield, Neb., and their families; and two stepgranddaughters, Tiffany and Merrideth Telfer, both of Seattle, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Phyllis; brothers, Phillip and Max; and his wife of 49 years, Ardeth.

Memorial contributions can be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
