Douglas N. Gaul, 75, of Sioux City, died Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City.

Douglas was born June 2, 1934, at Alton, the son of Martin and Marie (Reith) Gaul. He grew up and attended school in Alton, graduating from St. Mary's High School.

Doug married Nancy Wiggerman May 26, 1953, at Alton. Together they made their home in Estherville and then Spirit Lake, where Doug worked as an accountant. Nancy died in November 1966.

Doug and the family moved to Le Mars in 1968 where he worked at Wells' Dairy and at Gene's Processing in Brunsville.

He married Margaret Brownmiller Sept. 14, 1974, at Craig. They made their home in Le Mars until moving to Detroit Lakes, Minn., in 1985. Doug continued his education at Detroit Lakes Vocational School, moved back to Le Mars in 1988 and started his landscaping and small engine repair business.

In past years he had been an avid hunter and fisherman. Doug enjoyed boating, woodworking and had been on many bowling teams over the years.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Sioux City; daughter Gwen and Michael Wilkerson of Wapello; son Stephen and Roxane Gaul of Downers Grove, Ill.; two stepdaughters, Tammi Scott and her fiance Ronnie of Longmont, Colo., and Irena and William Markey of Sioux City; a stepson Alan Scott and his fiancée, Tammy Palmer of Lawton; a brother, Martin Jr. and Irene Gaul of Warsaw, Mo.; two sisters, Marilyn and Robert Smith of Sioux City and Rita and Bud Bierwirth of Le Mars; and a special niece, Kim Gaul of Le Mars.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Marie Gaul; his first wife, Nancy; and a brother, Marvin Gaul.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Monday, July 6, at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel in Sioux City with the Rev. Ed Frank officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 2 to 4 p.m.
