LE MARS, Iowa -- Florence R. Thiel, 57, of Le Mars passed away Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars from complications caused by ovarian cancer.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Revs. Kevin Richter and Daniel Greving officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a Christian Mother's rosary at 4 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., at Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

The former Florence Rosiland Kommes was born Sept. 21, 1947, in Le Mars, the daughter of Albert and Mabel (Luken) Kommes. She was raised in the Le Mars area and graduated from Gehlen Catholic High School in 1965. She then attended Le Mars Beauty College, where she received her diploma and was then licensed in the state of Iowa. She owned and operated the La Vogue Beauty Salon for a few years.

She married Daniel "Butch" Thiel on May 23, 1970, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. After their marriage, the couple lived in Le Mars, where she provided in-home day-care for more than 25 years.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where she served as a Eucharistic minister. She was also a member of the Christian Mothers Society. She was an avid bowler and bowled in three different leagues. She was an enthusiastic sports fan and enjoyed following her four sons sporting events as far away as Belgium.

Survivors include her husband, Butch Thiel of Le Mars; four sons, Chris Thiel and his wife, Jenny of Omaha, Matt Thiel and his fiancee, Kim and her two children, Brandon and Madison, all of Omaha, Mitch Thiel of Omaha and Andy Thiel and his wife, Megan of Phoenix, Ariz.; four sisters and their husbands, Dolores and Gerald Sitzmann of Hinton, Iowa, Mary Ann and Bill Langley of Burnsville, Minn., Loretta and Lee Steichen of Alton, Iowa, and Lavonne and Pete Galles of Remsen, Iowa; three brothers and their wives, Ken and Erlene Kommes of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Rich and Marlys Kommes of Le Mars and Leonard and Betty Kommes of Le Mars; a sister-in-law, LaVonne Kommes of Le Mars; four brothers-in-law, John "Buck" Thiel, Bernard "Shorty" Thiel, Marion Thiel and Bob Thiel and his wife, Mary Kay, all of Remsen, Iowa; her mother-in-law, Lucille Thiel of Remsen; many nieces and nephews; and many great-niece and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Don and Larry Kommes; her father-in-law, Jack Thiel; a nephew, Joe Sitzmann; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Thiel.
