Robert Schumacher Sr., 91, of Remsen, died Friday, May 22, 2009, at Heartland Care Center in Marcus.
Robert Schumacher Sr. was born Aug. 2, 1917, at Eldora, the son of Carl and Emma (Haack) Schumacher. Robert was raised and educated in the Remsen area and graduated from Remsen Public School. Then he continued his education at Cohn Electric Engineering in Chicago, Ill., where he met his wife Cecile Dal Cerro. They were married Dec. 27, 1938 in Chicago, Ill. Cecile died March 4, 1999.
Robert established Bob's Electric in Remsen which later evolved into Beco Inc. Electrical Contractors. Robert employed his sons and son-in-law and taught many his trade.
Among his hobbies and loves were raising dogs and quarter horses. Many became champions. He was the best grandpa to so many.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church ELCA in Remsen, AQHA Quarterhorse Association, Northwest Electrical Association (Lifetime Award), O-R Saddle Club, AKA Association and OWLS.
Survivors include one son, Robert Schumacher Jr. and his wife Bev of Omaha, Neb.; daughter Judi Drum of Remsen, daughter Joyce and her husband Frank Shepherd of Wilksburo, N.C., daughter-in-law, Mary Schumacher of Remsen; 11 grandchildren, Deb and Doug Drum, Pam du Pré, Shawn Blomker, Lisa Lamb, Tona and Dan Schumacher, Shannon and Shane Shepherd, Krista Wilson; 19 great-grandchildren; brother Paul Schumacher of Mapleton; sister, Jane Letsche of Marcus; and sister-in-law, Shirley Schumacher of Le Mars.
He was preceded in death by a son Thomas Schumacher; a granddaughter, Gretchen Wurth; brothers, Daniel and James Schumacher; son-in-laws, Cordell Rogers and Duane Drum; and a daughter-in-law, Joyce Schumacher.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church ELCA with the Rev. Craig Miller officiating. Burial will be in Remsen Community Cemetery. Friends may call anytime after 4 p.m. today (Tuesday). Visitation and a prayer service at 7 p.m. will all be at the St. Paul Lutheran Church ELCA in Remsen. Visitation will resume from 9 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at the church. The Fisch Funeral Home & Monument of Remsen is in charge of arrangements.
Casket bearers will be Phil Letsche, Dave Vander Hamm, Donald Hansen, Steve Roder, Kirk Letsche and Dennis Slota.
Honorary bearers will be Daniel Groff, Tom Augustine, Randy Beyer, Dick Letsche, Jimmy Battaglia, Jim Harpenau, Sandy Anderson and Jeff Tritz.
