Donald L. Plate, 70, of Le Mars, died Friday, April 17, 2009, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Donald Lee Plate was born March 22, 1939, on his family's farm near Monroe, one of seven children born to Tim and Geraldine (Rouw) Plate. He graduated from Pella Christian High School.
On Oct, 9, 1959, Don and Doretha Nieuwsma were married in Pella. They made their home in Prairie City where Don worked as a butcher at Robert's Grocery. Don continued his career in the meat processing industry at Gus Glaser Meats in Des Moines. He later transferred to Jimmy Dean Foods and worked as a route salesman.
The family moved to Worthington, Minn., and Don took a position with Morman Feeds as a sales representative. Then, an opportunity arose in Mitchell, S.D., with Harker's Meats. Don worked as a route salesman in South Dakota before moving to Le Mars in 1978. He then became a national account sales representative with Harker's. Don retired from Harker's in 1991.
On Nov. 23, 1990, Don and Ann (Goodwin) Lampe were married at Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Le Mars. Don worked part-time in his retirement years as a delivery driver for Arnold Motors in Le Mars. Ann died July 12, 2006.
Don was a member of Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Le Mars. He enjoyed traveling and camping. He and Ann spent winters in Alamo, Texas. They were also involved with Majestic View Ministries in Montana. Don's faithful companion Quincy rarely left his side.
He will be lovingly remembered by a daughter and her husband Deb and Kevin Nobel of Le Mars, and their children Jonathan Nobel and his daughter Briar, Jamie and Jake Huber, Jeffery, Sandy and Ada Nobel; a son Douglas Plate of Navarre, Fla.; a daughter Donna Darnell and her special friend Glen Kunkel of Remsen, and her children Terrance Herman, Danielle Herman and her fiancé Kevin Kass, and Desiree Herman; a son-in-law Tim Herman of Merrill; a brother John Plate of Prairie City; brother Edward and Reda Plate of Prairie City; a sister Joan and Don Ryerkerk of Des Moines, Iowa, sister Helen and John Tibboel of Prairie City, Iowa, a sister Kathryn and Erwin Frerichs of Des Moines, and a sister Marjorie and Harold Van Wyk of Marshalltown; step-children Charlotte and Ted Sailers of Urbandale, and their daughter Grace, Derik Lampe of South Sioux City, Neb., Michelle and Shane Jasper of Le Mars, and their children Noel, Layne, and Madison, and Chad and Melissa Lampe of Le Mars and their children Whitney and Carter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Duane (1978); wife Ann; and a sister-in-law Jeanette Plate.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Le Mars. Pastor Clyde Miller will officiate. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The family will be present from 5 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the service on Wednesday.
