Richard Raymond Ortmann was born on January 13, 1934, in Remsen, Iowa to the late John Henry and Eleanor (Bohnencamp) Ortmann. He was baptized in January of 1934 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen and was later confirmed in that same church in 1947. Richard received his education at St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen and remained in Remsen until 1954 working at Bob's IGA.

On June 8, 1954, Richard was united in marriage to Colleen Marie Freking at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens, Iowa. This marriage was blessed with seven children, Gary, Ken, Jeanine, Dan, Ann, Tim, and Mike. After marriage, Richard and Colleen lived in Le Mars, Iowa where Richard worked for Bud's Super-Valu and then at Swanson's Foods as a meat cutter. In 1959, they moved to Windom where Richard worked for Swanson's Foods, Hy-Vee, Ronnie's Jack and Jill, Gordy's and finally Sunshine Foods all as a meat cutter. Dick retired in October of 2007 after fifty-eight years as a meat cutter.

Recently, Richard had been in failing health after a fall at home in January. He was hospitalized in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where he passed away peacefully, with his family at his bedside, on Saturday, April 18th, 2009, at the Doughtery Hospice House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 75 years, 3 months, and 5 days.

Richard was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom where he ushered for many years and served on the Pastoral Council for two terms. Richard will be remembered as a caring and loving husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa who enjoyed the company of many family and friends.

Richard is survived by his loving wife of fifty-four years, Colleen Ortmann of Windom; seven children, Gary (Lynn) Ortmann of Marshall; Ken (Nancy) Ortmann of Marshall; Jeanine (Matt) Hiller of Sioux Falls, SD; Dan (Linda) Ortmann of Windom; Ann (Gary) Arendt of Sioux Falls, SD; Tim (Ellie) Ortmann of Buffalo; Mike Ortmann of Wadena; 20 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; two sisters and four brothers, Betty (Clifford) O'toole of Tyler; Rita Smith of Lisbon, IA; Paul Ortmann of Lisbon, IA; Bob (Sally) Ortmann of Remsen, IA; Jerry (Nancy) Ortmann of Lisbon, IA; Jack (Cheryl) Ortmann of Palo, IA; one sister-law, Irene Ortmann of Remsen, IA; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Roman Ortmann; two brother-in-laws, Don Smith and Ken Delperdang; and one sister, Mary Jane Delperdang
