HINTON, Iowa -- Norman G. Newberg, 67, of Hinton died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital of complications from surgery.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hinton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jason Gutzmer officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City.

Norman G. Newberg was born Jan. 14, 1937, in Sioux City, the son of Virgil and Lillian (Weinrich) Newberg. He was raised on the family dairy farm northwest of Hinton. He attended Liberty Consolidated School and graduated in 1955. He then attended Iowa State University before joining the Iowa Army National Guard. He spent 5 1/2 years in the Guard before returning to Iowa State. Norm played basketball in high school. He pitched softball for teams in Hinton and at Iowa State University. He also wrestled at ISU. After college, he returned to Hinton and joined the family farming business in which he was still active.

He married Johneen Bolshaw on Aug. 26, 1960, in Sioux City.

He was a member of Hinton United Methodist Church. He served for 21 years in various positions at the Farmers Co-op in Hinton. He was currently on the board of directors of Floyd Valley Grain, L.L.C. and had served for a long time on the Plymouth County Republican Center Committee. He was recently elected a Liberty Township Trustee. Norm was an avid sports fan, especially for his beloved ISU Cyclones. He enjoyed fishing and spending time having coffee with his friends.

Survivors include his wife, Johneen, of Hinton; a daughter, Melissa Newberg, and her fiance, Larry Lencki, of Joliet, Ill.; a son, Eric Newberg, and his wife, Lori, of Modale, Iowa; a brother, Virgil Newberg Jr. of Hinton; a sister, Beverly Albers, and her husband, Dale, of Hinton; his stepmother, Dorothy Newberg, of Hinton; two grandchildren, Jennifer and John Newberg; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Honorary pallbearers will be Lamont Hageman, Larry Hansen, Don Arndt, Jeff Miller, Roger Price, Dennis Newberg and Darrel Newberg.
