DONALD GALE

Donald Gale, 28, of Akron, was killed instantly Saturday morning in a one-car accident on Highway 12 eight miles north of Sioux City in Plymouth County.

Gale was killed when the car he was driving left Highway 12 and crashed into a 12-ft ditch.

Riding with Gale was James Kelly, 22, also of Akron. He was taken to St. Vincent’s hospital in Sioux City by the Sioux Ambulance service and was termed in “critical” condition following the accident. Today he is in “serious” condition. He was responding to treatment. He had chest and head injuries. He was to undergo surgery today and had regained consciousness Saturday night.

Sylvester Luken, Plymouth County coroner said the two were believed to be returning to Akron from Sioux City. He said Gale may have dozed at the wheel. He suffered a crushed chest and fractured skull.

The crash attracted the attention of the Cyrus Knapp farm family nearby. The Knapps went to the scene and found both men still in the car, which had landed upright, but was virtually demolished.

Sheriff Frank Scholer, Luken and highway patrolmen investigated the accident.

Funeral services for Mr. Gale will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic church at Akron. Burial will be in an Akron cemetery.

The body was taken from the Anderson funeral home in Sioux City to the residence at Akron, where the rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Monday.

Mr. Gale was born January 5, 1928, at Akron. He operated a corn sheller for a brother at Akron. He was a veteran of the Korean War and a member of the American Legion at Akron.
