HEADLINES: George W. Simpson Dies In North Dakota
NAME OF DECEASED & AGE: George W. Simpson, age of 81 years, 10 months and 9 days
DATE OF DEATH: Monday morning, Nov. 30, 1953
PLACE OF DEATH: …at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bernold Groth, at Mayville, N.D., where he had been making his home the past several weeks.
CAUSE OF DEATH: During the past two months he suffered a series of strokes.
DATE OF BIRTH: January 21, 1872
PLACE OF BIRTH: Aurelia, Iowa
PARENTS: He was one of seven children of Naomi and John Robert Simpson.
SPOUSE & DATE & PLACE of 1st MARRIAGE: In Paullina, he met Elletha Winn, whom he married on Dec. 25, 1901. Three daughters were born to this union, Naomi, who died in infancy, Margaret, who died at the age of three, and Ruth Alice (Mrs. Bernold Groth.)

OCCUPATION: Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Vermillion, S.D., where he spent his youth. After attending public schools, he enrolled at the University of South Dakota and during the summers went out on the original government survey of the state. After finishing his schooling, he went to Paullina, Iowa, where he worked for an uncle who operated an elevator. For a short time after their marriage they lived on a farm near Merrill, Iowa. Then they and two other couples staked claims in Belle Fourche county, South Dakota. After proving the claim, the family moved back to Merrill, where Mr. Simpson became cashier in a bank. He also served as secretary of the school board for 30 years and was acting as treasurer of the town of Merrill until shortly before his death.

SURVIVORS: …by his daughter, Mrs. Bernold Groth; three granddaughters of Mayville, N.D.; two sisters, Nina Williams of Downey, Cal., and Harriet Cairnduff of Seattle, Wash.

PLACE OF BURIAL: Interment was in the family plot at Paullina, Iowa.
