John R. "Jack" Spies, 82, of Hinton, died Saturday, March 21, 2009.

Jack Spies was born Oct. 11, 1926 in Sioux City, the son of Phillip and Anita (Buenger) Spies. Jack married Dorothy Shaw Oct. 24, 1947, in Sioux City. He was a lifelong Hinton area resident.

Jack served on the Plymouth County Board of Supervisors for eight terms and was on the Hinton City Council for eight years. He was active in the Hinton Community Civic Club and served on the Hinton Volunteer Fire Department for 26 years. He was Fire Chief for eight years. He was also a member of the Merrill Lions Club.

Jack was an agent for the Plymouth Coop Oil Co. for 50 years. He was president of Spies Brothers Appliance and Service Station for 36 years.

He was a member of the Hinton United Methodist Church and had served on several church boards.

Jack was a member of Triangle Masonic Lodge # 643 A.F. & A.M, Scottish Rite Bodies, York Rite Bodies, Abu Bekr Shrine Wrecking Crew, The Royal Order of Jesters and the White Horse Mounted Patrol. He was Potentate of the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple in 1985 and was President of the Wrecking Crew.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy of Hinton; three children, Kenneth J. Spies and his wife Betti of Hinton, Janice Allen and her husband Joel of West Bend, Wis., and Thomas Spies and his wife Sherry of Baton Rouge, La.; one brother, Duane Spies of Hinton; one sister, Phyllis Stevens and her husband Max of Kingsley; seven grandchildren: John K. Spies and his wife Tonya, Brad Spies, Dana Allen, Matthew Spies, Brianna Evans, Kamden Spies and Cale Spies; and three great-grandchildren: Brody, Kenedi and Dawson Spies.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Geraldine Kelso and Jeanette Parks.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at Hinton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Peg Ellingson officiating. Private graveside services will be held at the Melbourne Cemetery, rural Hinton.

Visitation was after 4 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m. at the Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City. There was a Masonic service at 6:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Pallbearers were his grandchildren.

Memorials may be made in his name to Abu Bekr Shrine Transportation Fund or the Hinton United Methodist Church.
