SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- Herbert H. "Herb" Meis, 86, of South Sioux City died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael Catholic Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Daniel L. Wittrock officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present at 5 p.m., a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary, all at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.

Mr. Meis was born Nov. 2, 1916, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Joseph I. and Katherine G. (Roerig) Meis. He moved to California with his brother, Ed, in 1944. He worked in the Richmond Shipyards for one year, then worked for a trucking company on the waterfront for a short time. He returned to Sioux City as a meat cutter and worked in several grocery stores until his retirement in 1986.

He married Evelyn J. "Eve" McNeil on Nov. 19, 1946, in Sioux City. She died April 8, 1984, in Sioux City. He then married JoAnn (Holmberg) Winegardner on May 30, 1987, in South Sioux City.

He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Father Trecy Council and had served as a past Grand Knight. He also was a member of the Garrigan Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed pitch, golf, bowling, dancing, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Survivors include his wife, JoAnn; two stepsons and their wives, Rick and Fran Winegardner of Fort Randall, S.D., and Mark and Hope Winegardner of Sergeant Bluff; a stepdaughter and her husband, Joellen and Andy Adams of Bloomington, Ill.; two brothers, Raymond of Alton, Iowa, and Clarence of Keota, Iowa; five sisters, Marian Ebdalla of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Margaret Grau of Littleton, Colo., Joan VanSteenwyk of Lakewood, Calif., Janet Olson of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Ruth Marienau of Des Moines; seven stepgrandchildren, Justin Morris, Joshua Adams, Thomas and Jessica Winegardner, Diana and Denise Gettner and Dawn Smith; and a great-stepgrandson, Truman Smith.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Edward, Leonard and Richard; and a sister, Clotilda Wolf.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Grau, Kenneth Meis, Thomas Kolash, Justin Morris, Joshua Adams and Thomas Winegardner. Honorary pallbearers will be Rex Wilcox, Francis Stansberry, Edward Corey, Daniel Tighe, Darrell Engle, Earl Bowman, Sotto Virruso, Bob Garvey and Harold Broderson.
