SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- Ernest J. Kotalik, 81, of South Sioux City died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Regency Square Care Center in South Sioux City following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Michael Catholic Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Raymond P. Wieling officiating. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Friday in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, S.D., with the Rev. Baumberger officiating. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. and a rosary at 7:30 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Mr. Kotalik was born May 25, 1922, in Tabor, S.D., the son of Joseph J. and Anna J. (Kozak) Kotalik Jr. He had lived in Yankton, Hubbard, Neb., Sioux Falls, S.D., and Le Mars, Iowa, before moving to South Sioux City in 1968.

He married Elizabeth Schreiner on Nov. 10, 1952, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, Iowa. He owned and operated his own truck cab. He operated as a truck driver for 37 years. He also worked as a security guard for Hirschbach Motor Lines after his initial retirement.

He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church. He enjoyed gardening and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Elizabeth of South Sioux City; 11 children, Darrell and his wife, Deborah of South Sioux City, Eugene and his wife, Denise of Dakota City, Thomas and his wife, Sandra of South Sioux City, Stanley A. Kotalik of South Sioux City, Ernest A. of Sioux City, David Kotalik of Stuart, Va., Melvin and his wife, Bonnie of Chesapeake, Va., Duane and his wife, Stephannie of Sioux City, Rebecca K. and her husband, Michael Price of Sioux Falls, Roger J. Kotalik of South Sioux City, and Donna M. and her husband, Robert Klassen of South Sioux City; 23 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a sister, Agnes Pokorney of Tabor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Harold and Marvin Kotalik; and a grandson, Jasen A. Kotalik.

Pallbearers will be Marcus Kotalik, Jacob Kotalik, Michael Price, Sean Kotalik, Christopher Price, Daniel Price, Robert Klassen Jr. and Robert Klassen Sr.
