AKRON, Iowa - Xaveris K. Kelley, 88, of Akron died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at Akron City Convalescent Care Center.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. today at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron with the Rev. Msgr. Richard Zenk officiating. Visitation was 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, with an informal tribute at 7 p.m., at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.
Xaveris Kelley was born March 5, 1916 in rural Merrill, Iowa, the daughter of John and Katherine (Wiltgen) Hoffmann. She graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School in Le Mars, Iowa and attended the National Business Training (NBT) College in Sioux City. She was employed as a secretary at Booth Fisheries in Sioux City for two years and cooked at St. Joseph's Hospital, Sioux City until 1939.
She married John Kelley on Sept. 16, 1939 in Sioux City. He died Oct. 9, 1988. Mrs. Kelley cooked at the Akron Bowl for five years, followed by 17 years at the Hi-Way Cafe in Akron. The couple lived in Sioux City until 1943 when they moved to a farm west of Merrill, Iowa. The family then moved to a farm east of Westfield, Iowa, where they lived from 1949 to 1978 when they moved to Akron.
Mrs. Kelley was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Akron, the Catholic Daughters and the Embroidery Club. She enjoyed bowling until 2002 and also enjoyed quilting and cross stitch.
Survivors include eight sons, Dan and Pat, both of Burlington, N.C., Jerry and his wife Mary of Hawarden, Iowa, Tom and his wife Jeanie of Sioux City, Tim and his wife Donna, Bob and Rick and his wife Ronelle all of Akron, Jim and his wife Betty of Sioux Falls, S.D; three daughters, Jan Embrey and her husband Lew of Claflin, Kan., Garnet Buum and her husband Gary of McPherson, Kan., and Nancy Kelley of Oberlin, Ohio; 23 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister Doloris Hall of Le Mars and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Jack Hoffmann and one grandson Jeff Kelley.
