LE MARS, Iowa -- Verna M. Johnson, 88, of Le Mars, formerly of Brunsville, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church in rural Le Mars, with the Rev. Peter Boe officiating. Burial will be in Christ Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.
Verna Mary Mattas was born March 26, 1914, on the family farm in Washington Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, the daughter of John Wesley and Mary (Buryanek) Mattas. She attended country school near her home. Following her education, she helped her family with farming.
On Aug. 28, 1935, she and Eddie Herman Johnson were united in marriage at Christ Lutheran Church in rural Le Mars. The couple made their home on a farm west of Brunsville for five years, before moving to a farm near Craig, Iowa. The couple farmed near Craig until they retired in 1987, and moved to Brunsville. Eddie passed away March 9, 1990. She stayed in Brunsville until moving to The Abbey in Le Mars on Dec. 18, 1998.
She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church. While at The Abbey, she enjoyed playing cards with her friends, Marv and Dewey.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter and her husband, LaRae and Kenneth Ludwigs of Le Mars; two grandsons, Barry Ludwigs and his wife, Joyce, and Ronald Ludwigs, all of Le Mars; and her great-grandchildren, Kenzi, Shandi, Brandi and Lindi, all of Le Mars.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eddie; nine brothers, George, Frank, Clarence, Wesley, Edward, Harry, Leslie, Lawrence and Joseph; and four sisters, Carolyn Marienau, Frances Mattas, Edith Bauerly and Lorraine Mattas.
