AKRON, Iowa -- Harold E. Johnson, 83, of Akron died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron, with the Rev. Laurice Streyffeler officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 7 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m., at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.

Harold E. Johnson was born Dec. 20, 1918, near Westfield, Iowa, the son of Carl and Elsa (Bjorklund) Johnson. He graduated from Westfield High School and attended business school for two years. He then returned to the family farm and farmed in the Akron area for more than 30 years.

He married Helen Ross on June 7, 1941, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. While farming, he started selling State Farm Insurance as an agent for more than 26 years in the Akron area.

He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, where he had served on the church board. He was a charter member of the Akron Lion's Club, organized the Chamber of Commerce, served as president of the country school board and served as president of the Akron School Board. Along with these, he served on several other boards and organizations too numerous to list.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Johnson; a son and his wife, Kenneth and Barbara Johnson of Albert Lea, Minn.; two sisters, Leona Dewey of Westfield, Iowa, and Eleanor Jarret of Portland, Ore.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Paul Johnson; a daughter and her husband, Karen and Roy Pike; two brothers, Melvin and Ernest Johnson; and two sisters, Alice Delano and Norma Heinrickson.

Pallbearers will be Randy and Russel Johnson, Ed Williams, Blaine Smith, Chuck Dewey, Herk Van Hagel, Tom Ross and Jerry Jans.
