Hilda J. Welch, 85, of rural Akron, passed away Friday, March 24, 2000 at her residence.

Services were held Tuesday, March 28, 2000 at Brule Creek Lutheran Church, rural Akron, South Dakota with Rev. Richard Wiekert officiating. Lori Johnson was organist with congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art" and "Borning Cry" and a special music duet by Isabel Onnen and Owen Buum singing "In the Garden" and "Rock of Ages". Burial was in Brule Creek Lutheran Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jim and Chris Schurdevin, Bill Treloar, Todd Halverson, Kyle Paulson and Charles Nygard. Honorary pallbearers were Don Schurdevin, Russell Paulson, Gorman Nygard and Paul Lamoureux. Schroeder Funeral Home, Akron, was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Welch was born October 28, 1914 near Alcester, South Dakota to Cornelius and Emma Solaas Hansen. She completed the eighth grade at North Spink School. She was married to Orville Welch March 28, 1940 near Beresford, South Dakota. They lived in Elk Point, South Dakota for two years and then moved near Akron, where they farmed for many years. Mr. Welch passed away May 7, 1974.

Mrs. Welch belonged to an extension club and was active in the ladies group at Brule Creek Lutheran Church where she served as president during the Church's centennial. She loved to garden and bake. She sold eggs and cared for chickens for many years.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Carol Welch, of Akron; a granddaughter, Lisa Welch; a sister-in-law, Rose Hansen; and many nieces and nephews..

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Orris and Clayton; two brothers, Hans and Sivert Hansen and a sister, Clara Price.
