HAWARDEN, Iowa -- Helen L. Schurman, 85, of Hawarden died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Hawarden, with the Rev. Tim Walker officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.

Helen L. Schurman was born Feb. 8, 1919, in Hawarden, the daughter of Bill and Maddie (Groves) White. She was raised on a farm north of town until her early teens, when her family moved into Hawarden. She attended school in Hawarden.

She married Edward Schurman on Feb. 16, 1939, in Le Mars, Iowa. They lived in Hawarden, where Edward was employed with Northwestern Railroad and then in a feed mill. She was a certified nurse's aide at nursing homes in Le Mars, Alcester, S.D., Hudson, S.D., and at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Hawarden. She worked as a nurse's aide for 30 years before retiring. Edward died Oct. 27, 1982.

She was a member of United Methodist Church and enjoyed ceramics, embroidery and making blankets. In her later years, she enjoyed her companionship with her special friend, Conrad Huls.

Survivors include four children and their spouses, Jack and Nancy of Chicago and their children, Kim and Kellie, Betty Ann and Elwien Danielson of St. Louis Park, Minn., and their children, Debbie Johnson and Rusty Danielson, Ted and Jan of Piedmont, S.D., and their children, Bobby, Ryan, Evan and Karie, and Jim and Kathy of Hawarden and their sons, Mike and Jeff; seven great-grandchildren, Andy Johnson, Eric Johnson, Katie Danielson, Kody Danielson, Brandon Schurman, Keagan Schurman and Courtney Schurman; and a sister, Ruth Penning of Le Mars, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred, Ted and James; a sister as a child, Alice White; an infant daughter, Barbara Kay; and a great-granddaughter, Hannah Schurman.
