Jack T. Edwards, 86, of Le Mars, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at Brentwood Center, Good Samaritan Society-Le Mars.
Jack T. Edwards was born July 22, 1922, in Plymouth County, the son of Jess and Dorothy (Peterson) Edwards. Jack attended Clark Elementary in Le Mars and later Le Mars Central High School.
In early years Jack operated a popcorn stand near the Vander Meer Bakery. When the movie theater started selling popcorn, Jack moved his operation to the west end of Plymouth Street. He expanded his sales to bread, milk, candy and ice cream. Through this business he made many friends and earned several loyal patrons.
Jack then began his career in the newspaper business. He started at the Globe Post until it was destroyed by fire some 20 years later. He then went to work at the Le Mars Daily Sentinel for an additional 20 years. He retired when he was 62 and cared for his mother for the next seven years. He moved to Brentwood Oct. 9, 1997.
Jack was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars where he was baptized and confirmed. He was an avid baseball fan with his favorite team being the Atlanta Braves. At Brentwood, Jack was very helpful and enjoyed the activities, his radio, the newspaper and television.
He is survived by special family friends Verle and Vicky Matzdorff of Le Mars and their family, Lori Looyenga, Cindy and Jon Erlandson, and Curt and Tracy Matzdorff; Tori, Alexis and Jacob Looyenga, Devin, Mike, Lia and Jack Erlandson, Sidney and Austin Matzdorff; and a dear friend, Linda Nitzschke of Sioux City; and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The Rev. Gary Landsness of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home. The family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
