Darvin Joseph Hall, 87, of rural Hinton, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at his residence after a lengthy illness.
Darvin was born Oct. 13, 1921, in Whiting, the eldest son of Ellwood and Alma (LaBrune) Hall. The family moved to the Jefferson, S.D., area when he was a child. h e graduated from Jefferson High School in 1939.
He married Evelyn Ross on March 28, 1941, in Omaha, Neb. The couple lived east of Sioux City where they farmed and milked dairy cows for 19 years. In 1965 they moved to a farm east of Hinton and raised cattle and hogs. They resided in Mesa, Ariz., during the winter months from 1990 until 2007.
In addition to Darvin's love for his family and farming, he enjoyed visiting with people, playing cards and square dancing. he and his wife were avid square dancers since 1958 with their last dance on Feb. 15, 2005. Together they served as secretary, vices president and president of state and local square dance organizations. They were Iowa State Convention chairmen two times.
Survivors include two daughters, Katherine "Kay" Curtis of Tempe, Ariz., and Theresa "Tish" Howe and her husband, Dave, of Hinton; four grandchildren, Brad Curtis of Tempe, Ariz., Darci Curtis Arce and her husband, Ramon Arce of Tempe, Ariz., Emily Howe of Omaha, Neb., and Grant Howe of Hinton; five brothers and their wives, Bernard and Madonna Hall of Elk Point, S.D., Russell and Midge Hall of Elk Point, S.D., Raymond and Mary Hall of Burbank, S.D., John and Helen Hall of Sioux City, and Vincent Hall of Canon City, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a toddler sister, Kathleen Hall; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Howe; a son-in-law, Charles Curtis; a sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law; two nieces and two nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Neptune, rural Hinton, with the Rev. Dan Greving officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Neptune. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today (Thursday), with the rosary at 3:30 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., all at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home in Sioux City.
