RITES HELD SUNDAY

Funeral services for the Rev. Paul G. Viehe, 72, a retired minister of the Congregational church, were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Mauer funeral home.

The Rev. Allen Bowe conducted the service and burial was in the LeMars cemetery.

He had been in poor health since 1935, when a nervous affliction caused him to retire from his pastorate at Kingsley after serving there seven years. His condition grew worse in recent months.

Thursday, shortly before 6 p.m., his wife discovered his body in a garage behind their home. Coroner S.H. Luken termed the death suicide by hanging.

Rev. Viehe was born Oct. 15, 1879, at Freelandville, Ind. He was the sixth of seven sons of Casper and Catherine Viehe, all of whom preceded him in death.

He was graduated from the Evansville, Ind., high school and later from the Eden College Seminary at Webster Groves, Mo., and completed a year’s course at Princeton seminary in N.J.

He served pastorates in Minnesota and elsewhere before coming to Iowa before the first World War as minister of the Congregational church in Rock Rapids until 1922.

His marriage to Ethel Burns of LeMars took place here Aug. 22, 1922, and shortly thereafter they moved to Clarion. There followed pastorates at Clear Lake, Muscatine, and Glencoe, Minn., before they moved to Kingsley in 1928.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
