Dorothy Boomgaarden, 79, of Hawarden, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009, at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden with her family at her side.

Dorothy Mae Meyer was born Oct. 21, 1929, in Elk Point, S.D., the daughter of Louie and Annie (Haage) Meyer. She resided in Akron until she met and married the love of her life, William Boomgaarden Jr. on April 11, 1953. Together they raised their five children in Hawarden. Dorothy held many jobs, but she most enjoyed working at the Hillcrest Health Care Center as a nurse's aid.

She was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Dorothy was active in the Hawarden Saddle Club.

She loved to tell stories of old times, horseback riding and especially spending time with her family. Dorothy's passion for yodeling will not be forgotten.

Dorothy is survived by her five children: Marty Boomgaarden of Lincoln, Neb., Mark Boomgaarden and his special friend Denise Schreier of Le Mars, Madona (Darrel) Plueger of Surprise, Ariz., Michele (Terry) Linn of Cherokee, and Midge (Chris) McClosky of East Stroudsburg, Pa.; 10 grandchildren: Zeb (Shelly) Boomgaarden, Jake Boomgaarden, Kelly (Jeremy) Huls, Katie (Chris) Anderson, Aren Plueger, Zach, Jacoba and Tia Wilde, Robert and William McClosky; 10 great-grandchildren: Hayley Boomgaarden, Austin, Rianne and Carter Huls, Kasadee and Cooper Anderson, Isiah, Sadayah and Aren Plueger Jr. and Gabriel Bustos; one brother, Lloyd (Betty) Meyer and one sister, Alma Knecht all of Akron.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Boomgaarden Jr; grandson, Chad Plueger; sister, Helen Tentinger.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden. Burial will be at Grace Hill Cemetery, Hawarden. Visitation will begin at noon today (Friday) with the family present at 6 p.m. and a prayer service beginning at 7 p.m. all at the church. Porter Funeral Home, Hawarden is in charge of arrangements.
