Theodora "Teddy" Earnest, 90, of Akron, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009, at the Akron Care Center.

Theodora Root was born Oct. 14, 1918, near Elk Point, S.D., the daughter of Ross and Anna Mae (Montage) Root. She attended Sayles Grade School District #26 near her home and later graduated from Akron High School in 1936.

On Aug. 2, 1938 Teddy and John Henry Earnest were united in marriage at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron. The couple made their home in Akron. Teddy and Jay owned and operated Akron Feed Mills until Jay died June 20, 1973. Teddy sold the elevator and remained in Akron. She later moved to the Akron Care Center in December of 2000.

She was an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for more than 60 years.

Teddy loved to play cards, especially bridge. She enjoyed life and had fun where ever she went.

Teddy will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Nancy Johnson and her friend Skip Vernon of Le Mars; her son Michael Earnest and his wife Vicki of Okoboji; four grandchildren Jay Johnson and his wife Barb of Fridley, Minn., Joel Johnson and his wife Nikki of Le Mars, Lisa Mannes and her husband David of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, John Earnest and his wife Eileen of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; 10 great-grandchildren Kyle, Justin and Sara Johnson; Jacob, Madelyn and Jack Johnson; Spencer and Ryan Mannes, Abigail and Zachary Earnest; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Jay; a brother Robert Root and his wife Phyllis; a sister Vivian Nason and her husband Lester; and a great-grandson Joshua Johnson.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron. The Rev. Roger Linnan will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Scriptural prayer service set for 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church on Monday prior to Mass.
