LE MARS, Iowa - Helen E. Roberts, 82, of Le Mars died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Presbyterian United Church of Christ in Le Mars, with the Rev. Tim Olsen officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present after 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.

Helen Elizabeth Burkhardt was born Jan. 21, 1921, on the family farm near Meriden, Iowa, to Harry and Leita (Mason) Burkhardt. She was baptized in the Methodist faith. As a young girl, the family moved to Cherokee, Iowa. She received her education in Cherokee and graduated from high school in 1939.

She was united in marriage to Jack Roberts on July 28, 1945, at the Methodist Church in Cherokee. Soon after the couple married, they moved to Le Mars and made their home. She entered Plymouth Manor in June 2000.

The couple were members of Presbyterian United Church of Christ. She had been very active with the U.C.C. Guild for many years. She enjoyed bowling, reading and crocheting. For several years, she was an election clerk at the old Central High School and later at the Le Mars Public Library. She had also volunteered as a driver for the Meals on Wheels Program for several years.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Roberts of Le Mars; two daughters, Kathy and her husband, Mike Solomon of Sioux City and Jolene Lind of Le Mars; six grandchildren, Mike Roberts, Amy Roberts, Joy Solomon, Janelle Matthes, Kyle Lind and Kelly Lind; four great-grandchildren, Kaitlin Roberts, Rex Gotto, Xavier Roberts and Glavine Matthes; a brother and his wife, Donald and Lois Burkhardt of Cherokee; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Leita Burkhardt; a son, Steve Roberts in November 2002; and an infant sister, Gladys.

Pallbearers will be Mike Roberts, Dariuz Adamski, Jay Solomon, Todd Matthes, Kyle Lind and Kelly Lind.
