Donald Berendes, 77, of Remsen, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, at Orange City Area Health System, Orange City.
Donald Berendes was born Oct. 25, 1931, a rural Marcus, the son of Guido and Edith (Cox) Berendes. Donald was raised and educated in the Marcus and Remsen area. He moved to the Remsen area with his parents in 1940. He assisted his parents with the operation of their farm until 1952 when he moved with them into Remsen and was then a laborer in the Remsen area. He cared for his mother at home until she entered Happy Siesta Health Care Center in January 1991.
Donald enjoyed watching sports on TV. He also enjoyed visiting with people and having coffee at Mrs. B's.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Remsen, Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters.
Survivors include two sisters, Maxine and her husband Roman Staab and Ann Beck, all of Remsen; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Jack (Shirley) Berendes of Castle Rock, Colo., and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Jack; and one brother-in-law, Harry Beck.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Remsen. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Thursday. There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. a Catholic Order of Foresters and K of C Rosary at 8 p.m., all at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.
Casketbearers will be Mike and Pat Beck, Rick and Steve Berendes and Jerry and Jim Staab.
K of C honorary bearers will be member of the Knights of Columbus. C.O.F honorary bearers will be Joe, Pat and Russ Staab, Lyle Heidesch, Mark Poeckes and Fred Rolling.
