Howard McCorkell, one of the well known and most highly esteemed residents of this city passed away at his home Wednesday morning, March 23, 1938, after a brief illness. Although not feeling well, he was down town on Thursday of last week, but became quite ill that night and gradually declined until the end, despite all that could be done for his relief.
Howard McCorkell was born near Booneville, Dallas County, Iowa [April 01, 1865]and grew to young manhood there. He came to Plymouth County in 1885 with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph McCorkell who settled on a homestead seven miles northeast of Akron in Portland Township and where he assisted them in farming for a number of years. On March 27, 1901, he was united in marriage with Miss Estella Tucker, of Akron, and they began housekeeping in this city, in the house which was his home until his death. To this union were born nine children, Mrs. Esther Clarey, of Merrill, Iowa, Mrs. Dorothy Whitaker, of Durham, Mo., Mrs. Evah Davis of Sioux City; Wesley McCorkell, Mrs. Alta Mentzer, Mrs. Caryl Siebens, Mrs. Sybil Whitaker, Mrs. Lois Nielsen, and Jeanne McCorkell, all of Akron. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by two sisters and three brothers, Elizabeth of Akron, Mrs. W.W. Hyink, [Louisa “Lutie”] of LeMars, Elliot and J.L. [Joseph Leonard] of Akron and Walter McCorkell of California; also by 24 grandchildren.
Mr. McCorkell followed the occupation of farming all his life. He was a man of strict integrity and industrious habits, taking pride in a job well done in whatever work he did. He was a man of strong character and convictions and always took a keen interest in national, state and community affairs. A kind and loving husband and father, a helpful and sympathetic friend and neighbor, he will be sincerely missed and mourned in the community in which he spent more than half a century as a loyal and useful citizen. The community tenders its sympathy to the bereaved relatives.
Funeral services will be held Friday forenoon at 10:30 o’clock in the Akron, M.E. Church, conducted by Rev. J. F. Moore. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery.
