Rites Held Monday For Aloysius Pick

Prominent Lifelong Resident Dies Unexpectedly Early Friday

Funeral services were held in Remsen Monday morning for Aloysius (Ollie) S. Pick, 62 prominent citizen here and a lifelong resident who died unexpectedly early Friday morning while at the breakfast table in his home.

Mr. Pick had been conversing with his wife in an adjoining room, referring to their fishing success at Lake Henrick, Minn., the day before. Suddenly he collapsed and medical help was called immediately but the patient died within the hour, at about nine o’clock.

Mr. Pick had suffered a heart attack eight years ago when he was hospitalized for two months, and had since been able to do light work of various kinds. He had nevertheless been treated continuously for his heart condition.

Born on Farm Here

Born January 3, 1896, on a farm east of Remsen, he came from a large and prominent family of early settlers, the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Pick. He attended the nearby rural school and later St. Mary’s school in Remsen.

Married in 1922

On February 5, 1922 he was united in marriage to Catherine Krogman of Remsen, the marriage taking place in St. Mary’s Catholic church here and performed by the late pastor, the Rev. F. X. Schulte.

The couple continued to live here and Mr. Pick went into various occupations. Principal among these was a clerkship with the Farmers Co-operative company in Remsen, with which he was connected for 23 years. Later he went into the seed corn business, operated a farm sale lunch enterprise and for a number of years was the official mail messenger here.

For three years, 1946-1948, he operated a tavern in Oyens.

Service Activities

Mr. Pick joined the army at the beginning of World War I and served principally in Germany and France with the 88th machine gun division. He was discharged June 13, 1919.

Aloysius Pick was perhaps this community’s outstanding worker in behalf of the military veteran. He served as commander of Diekman post, Veterans of Foreign Wars for several years and at the time of his death was quartermaster, which office he held seven years. He was also commander of Pieper post, American Legion, for a total of 12 years, the last time and until his death for eight years.

But three weeks ago Mr. Pick was elected Eight district senior vice commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at its district meeting. Years ago he served for four years as Plymouth county adjutant.

Surviving are the sorrowing widow, Catherine, a daughter and three sons, who are: Mrs. Wayne Barnable, LeMars, LeRoy of Sergeant Bluff, Ia., John of Remsen and Cyril of Utica, Mich.

Surviving brothers and sisters are: Tony, Gregory and Alphonse, all of Remsen and Art of LeMars, and Mrs. Veronica Smith and Mrs. Clara Johnson of Remsen.

Funeral services were held Monday morning with the Rev. Father Raymond Pick, a cousin, of Dayton, Iowa, singing the requiem high mass in St. Mary’s Catholic church. Burial was in St. Mary’s cemetery.

Military honors were accorded by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars of Remsen and surrounding towns, and hundreds called at the Fisch funeral home here Saturday and Sunday in paying their respects to the memory of a loyal friend.

Pall bearers representing the American Legion were E. E. Wilson, D. A. Bacan, Elmer Treinen, and representing the V. F. W. Albert Jenks, Richard Kunkel and Claude Treinen.

Honorary pallbearers were Al Roder, Vince Delperdang, Joe Staab, Ed Nitzschke and Henry Ortmann.
