Wayne Bates, 68, of Merrill, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.
Wayne R. Bates was born March 19, 1940, at Sioux City, the son of Loran and Jessie (Macklem) Bates. Wayne graduated from Hinton High School in 1959. Wayne was united in marriage to Loanne Marbach Oct. 24, 1971, at Le Mars. To this union three children were born, Mike, Kevin, and Todd.
Wayne had worked as U.S.D.A. meat inspector and farmed near Merrill. He operated a rendering plant in Wayne, Neb., from 1973 to 1975. In 1975, the family moved to Fort Dodge where Wayne was a partner in Webster Processing. While living in Fort Dodge Wayne also operated a trucking firm and milk delivery business for several years. In 1988 they moved to Hinton where Wayne was a Star Route driver delivering mail to rural post offices. He continued with this until his health prevented him from driving his route.
Wayne and Loanne have been members of the Assembly of God for many years, most recently attending in Sioux City. His faith was a very important part of his life. He enjoyed collecting 1/16th scale toy tractors and implements, particularly collecting Farmall, Oliver, and International tractors.
Wayne's greatest joy in life was his family. He enjoyed the time with his boys and later his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Loanne of Merrill; three sons: Mike Bates and his wife Trinity of Lead, S.D., and their children Landon and Joseph, Kevin Bates and his wife Beth of Le Mars and their children Matthew, Brevin, Connor, and Kylie, and Todd Bates and his wife Tanya of Le Mars and their children Harlie and Brody; a brother LeRoy Bates and his wife Joan of Bronson; a brother-in-law, Larry Marbach of Brookings, S.D.; a sister-in-law, Lynell Marbach of Phoenix, Ariz.; several nieces and nephews and many friends.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Michayla Bates.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Assembly of God Church in Sioux City with Pastor Al Weiss officiating. Following the service cremation will take place with inurnment in the spring. Visitations will be after 3 p.m. today (Friday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 5:30 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service at the funeral home. Visitations will continue Saturday from 1 p.m. until service time.
Pallbearers will be Rodney Bates, Brad Hinsley, Ryan McGuire, Lorna Arens, Matt Steeg, and Lisa Stratman. Honorary casket bearers will be LeRoy Bates, Walter Macklem, Lyle Copenhaver, Chuck Culbertson, Bob Dorsey, Gayle Foster, Scott Linstrand, Woody Harrison, Landon Little, Bud Johnson, Cory Osterbuhr, and Julie Young.
