Duane Heimgartner, 83, of Le Mars, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars.

Duane George Heimgartner was born Nov. 21, 1925, on the family farm in Lincoln Township, near Hinton, the son of Henry and Katherine (Voegeli) Heimgartner. Duane was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton. He attended country school near his home in Lincoln Township. Duane was united in marriage to Lorna Eppling on July 21, 1946 at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Duane farmed in Lincoln Township, east of Hinton, until his retirement in February 1990. Duane and Lorna continued to live on the farm until they moved to Le Mars Dec. 26, 2003. Lorna died Sept. 15, 2004. In December 2004, Duane moved to Park Place Estates in Le Mars and in July of this year moved to the Good Samaritan Society-Le Mars.

The Heimgartners had been longtime members of Trinity Lutheran Church. Duane had taught Sunday school and held many of the positions within the church. While living in Le Mars, Duane and Lorna attended Grace Lutheran Church. Duane and Lorna led their Christian lives by example.

Duane was a believer of the Siouxland Blood Bank, having donated for many years. He was a member of the Plymouth County Farm Bureau and had served many positions within the organization including president.

Duane enjoyed bowling, woodworking, hunting, and family fishing trips.

Survivors include his three children: Marlene Rishel and her husband Steve of Plattsmouth, Neb., Ron Heimgartner and his wife Sandy of Hinton, and Mark Heimgartner and his wife Janell of Le Mars; eight grandchildren: Nathan Heimgartner and his wife Becky of O'Fallon, Mo., Dustin Heimgartner of St. Ann, Mo., Katie Heimgartner of Hinton, Kristen Heimgartner of Le Mars, Jacob Heimgartner of Le Mars, Brian Rishel of Papillion, Neb., Philip Rishel of Lenexa, Kan., and Aaron Rishel of Omaha, Neb.; a brother, Elroy and Maycelle Heimgartner of Le Mars; two sisters-in-law, Florence Heimgartner of Le Mars and Lillian Heimgartner of Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Katherine (Voegeli) Heimgartner; his wife Lorna; and three brothers, Albrik, Robert, and Rueben Heimgartner.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars, with Vicar Ed Durand officiating. Interment will be at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Hinton. Visitations will Friday morning at the church from 11 a.m. until service time. Arrangements are with the Carlsen Funeral Home of Le Mars.

Pallbearers will be Philip Rishel, Brian Rishel, Aaron Rishel, Dustin Heimgartner, Donald Heimgartner, and Dennis Heimgartner.
