Walter Hubert "Wally" Nilles, 84, of Remsen, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.

Walter Nilles was born July 30, 1924, at rural Remsen, the son of Joseph and Mary (Gengler) Nilles. Wally was raised in the Remsen area and attended country school and St. Mary Catholic School in Remsen through the eighth grade. He was then engaged in farming with his parents.

On May 27, 1946, he married Vera Mae Schilmoeller at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville. They made their home on the Nilles family farm near Remsen, where they were engaged in farming. In 1987 they retired and moved into Remsen. After his retirement he drove bus for Head Start and worked part-time at Farmers Co-Op Elevator in Remsen.

He had been a resident of Happy Siesta since Sept. 3, 2008.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Remsen, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Garrigan Assembly and was a member of the past Luxembourg Brotherhood.

He did volunteer work at St. Mary Catholic Church and school and helped in the mowing of St. Mary Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Vera Mae of Remsen; five daughters and their husbands, Linda and Duane Sudtelgte of Ackley, Margie and Tom Montgomery of Portland, Ore., Mary and Don McClaren of Evansdale, Malia and Kevin Mouser of Remsen, Jane and Jeff Peck of Cedar Falls; four sons and their wives, Larry and Donna of Sutherland, LeRoy and Vickie of Rapid City, S.D., Tim and Theresa of Knoxville, Ken and Barb of Sanborn; 25 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one sister, Rita Plendl of Kingsley; five sisters-in-law, Helen and her husband Cyril Theisen and Janice and her husband Dick Wurth. all of Remsen, Joan Cronin of Marcus, Eileen Schueder of Larrabee, and Diane and her husband Dennis Haupert of Soddy Daisy, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Melissa Mouser; two brothers, Eddie and Floyd; one sister, Dorothy Zimmer Christensen; and six brothers-in-law, Joe and his wife Fran Schilmoeller, Elmer Theisen, Joe Cronin, Vince Plendl, Loren Zimmer, George Christensen.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Remsen. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Friday. There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., and a rosary at 8 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus followed by a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus honor guard and chalice service, all at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Casketbearers will be Richard, Robert and Jacob Sudtelgte, Chris, Daniel, Adam and Chad Nilles, John and Josh Stamer, Joseph Mouser, Ben and Nathan Montgomery.

Members of the Knights of Columbus will serve as honorary bearers.
