Ralph Gabel, 96, of Le Mars, died Friday, July 1, 2005, at the Brentwood Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars.
Ralph Taylor Gabel was born on May 8, 1909, in Preston Township, Plymouth County, the son of John Franklin and Mary (Taylor) Gabel. He attended country school and Le Mars High School. On March 2, 1935, Ralph and Mildred Philips were united in marriage at the Adaville United Brethren Church parsonage, near Merrill.
He was a lifelong farmer and livestock feeder in Plymouth County, living on farms in America and Washington Townships. He was a member of the Adaville United Methodist Church.
In his retirement years Ralph was an avid gardener, golfer and bowler. He was also an active member of the Le Mars Lions Club.
Survivors include his three daughters, Marilyn Heitman and her husband, Myron of Williamsburg, Jane Peterson and her husband, Gary of rural Le Mars, and Nancy Gabel of Le Mars; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Deborah and Todd Hobbs, Jeff and Brenda Miller, Shaunda and Jack McQueeney, Doug and Kathy Miller, Andrea and Greg Keefe, Kyra and Mike Geraghty, Daren and Janet Heitman, Justin and Daphne Miller; three step-grandchildren and their spouses, Dawn and Matt Oleson, Lisa and Lonny Brown, and Heath Peterson, 21 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Eva and Kenneth Brown of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Mildred who died Nov. 9, 2003, and four sisters Ethel Rowe, Cleo Tindall, Opal Coates and Frances Bell.
Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The Rev. Benjamin Meeks will officiate. A private family burial service will take place prior to the service at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Mauer -- Johnson Funeral Home. The family will be present from 4 to 9 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Ralph's eight grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to Life Skills Training Center or the Plymouth County Historical Museum in Le Mars.
