Wallace A. "Wally" Marx, 82, of Sioux City died Monday, Sept. 8, 2008, at his home, under Hospice care and surrounded by his family, following a long illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, September 13, 2008 at the Church of the Nativity, with the Rev. Jerry Feierfeil officiating. Graveside services will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m., a rosary recited at 4 p.m., and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave.

Wally was born May 10, 1926, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Leo and Teresa (Merry) Marx. He graduated from Sioux City East High School in 1944, and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served from 1944 to 1946, and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. After his service, he returned to Sioux City and attended Morningside College.

He married Joanne Stephen on Aug. 1, 1959. They resided in Sioux City, where they raised seven children. They were members of Nativity Catholic Church. Wally worked for Burke Lumber until 1960. During that time, in 1953, he helped establish Marx Truck Line with his brothers, Bob and Don. In 1960, he worked for the Trailmobile Corporation as a factory salesman of semi trailers. In 1965, Wally and his brothers, Bob and Don founded Marx Truck Trailer Sales, where he continued to work until recently. Wally and Bob were also co-owners of the Southern Hills Country Club from 1992 to 2001.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne; their children, David Marx and his wife, Robin of Sioux City, Thomas Marx of Miami, Fla., Terri and her husband, Paul Johnson of Lincoln, Neb., Jennifer Marx of Chicago, Ill., Suzanne and her husband, Bill Domeier of Minneapolis, Minn., Craig Marx of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Kevin Marx and his wife, Cynthia of North Liberty, Iowa; grandchildren, Ryan, Sara and Cori Marx, Alex, Emily and Erica Johnson, William and Frederick Domeier and Andrew Marx; two brothers, Bob and Alice Marx of Sioux City, and George and Carolyn Marx of Maryland; a sister, Mary Frances Gunther of Le Mars, Iowa, a sister-in-law, Fran Marx of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bill, Don and Dick; and sisters, Pat and Geraldine.

Pallbearers will be nephews, Jim Gunther, Steve Haley, Russell Marx, Tim Marx, Grady Marx and Scott Marx.
