Leonard F. Plendl, 90, of Sioux City died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Cathedral of the Epiphany Catholic Church, with the Revs. Paul Kelly and Gerald Hartz officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. and a rosary recited by the Third Degree Knights of Columbus at 7:30 p.m., all at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Plendl was born Oct. 30, 1911, in Armour, S.D., the son of George and Agnes (Connor) Plendl. He moved with his family to Le Mars, Iowa, as a child. He had lived in Sioux City since the late 1930s.

He married Erma V. Pratt on Oct. 19, 1939, in Sioux City. He worked for Johnson Biscuit Co. and then for the Great Northern Railroad before joining Milwaukee Railroad. He worked for Milwaukee Railroad for 37 years. After retiring, he owned and operated a water softening business until 1996.

He was a member of the United Transportation Union, Cathedral of the Epiphany Catholic Church and Epiphany Council 743 Knights of Columbus. He was a former member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, dancing and shooting pool.

Survivors include his wife, Erma of Sioux City; two sons and their wives, Tom and Jean Plendl and Lyle and Debra Plendl, all of Sacramento, Calif.; a daughter, Janice Lehmann of Sioux City; three sisters, Helen Groetken, Rose Ann Majeres and Dorothy Tentinger, all of Le Mars; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Steve and Vincent; two sisters, Collette Groetken and Rita Dunn; and two grandchildren, Gregory Lehman and A.J. Plendl.

Pallbearers will be Matt and Mike Lehmann, George and Joe Plendl, Neil and Rick Groetken and Jim Tentinger.
