IRETON, Iowa -- Roger Lloyd Ping, 54, of Maple Grove, Minn., formerly of Ireton, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Minneapolis following a two-year battle with cancer.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig, Iowa, with the Rev. A. Pete Petersen officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Ireton. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at Porter Funeral Home in Ireton. A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Maple Grove Lutheran Church in Maple Grove, Minn.
Roger L. Ping was born Jan. 13, 1947, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Robert and Beulah (Wills) Ping.
Roger married Carol Asseln on June 20, 1970, in Craig. He attended Sioux Falls College in Sioux Falls, S.D., and the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D. Roger served in the U.S. Navy for 26 years, including two Vietnam tours and the Middle East conflict aboard the aircraft carrier USS America. He retired in 1991 following his final duty in the NROTC Unit at the University of Minnesota. After his naval retirement, he was employed at Recovery Engineering in Brooklyn Park, Minn.
Roger enjoyed cooking and refinishing antiques.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Carol; a son, Ryan of Maple Grove; his father, Robert of Ireton; a brother, Randal and his wife, Linda of Sheldon, Iowa; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Elmer and Shirley Asseln of Craig; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Keith and Rebecca Asseln of Craig; nine nieces and three nephews.
Roger was preceded in death by his mother, Beulah; and a brother, Michael.
