Charles W. Held, 79, of Sioux City died Sunday, July 11, 2004, in Wahoo, Neb., following a brief illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Roger Madden officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Held was born May 23, 1925, in Hinton, Iowa, the son of Walter and Mary (Royce) Held. He graduated from Hinton High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in the South Pacific.
He married Helen Ann Bartram on Dec. 17, 1945, in Sioux City. He graduated from Morningside College in 1952, with a bachelor of science degree in livestock marketing. Prior to his marriage, he lived in Hinton, then Sioux City before moving to Omaha in 1967. The couple returned to Sioux City in 1981. He started his employment in 1953 with Swift and Co. He retired in 1987 as a meat grader with the USDA. Mrs. Held died Jan. 4, 1985, in Sioux City.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
He is survived by a son, Tim Held of Papillion, Neb.; a daughter and her husband, Laurie and Kent Pearson of Wahoo, Neb.; a brother, Gordon of Young Harris, Ga.; two sisters, Esther and her husband, Joe Legg of Anamosa, Iowa, and Ruth Held of Wakonda, S.D.; and two grandchildren, Kendra and Katie Pearson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Ann; and two sisters, Carolyn Davies and Mary Lou Feikema.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Charles W. Held Scholarship Fund in care of Morningside College.
