Carol E. Port, 86, of Amelia, Va., and formerly of Akron, died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, in the Amelia Nursing and Rehab Center.

Carol Port was born July 9, 1922 to Frank and Jennie (Schuyler) McElhaney of Portland Township, Plymouth County. She attended rural grade school and Akron High School, graduating in 1939. She attended Iowa State Teacher's College at Cedar Falls, in preparation for teaching rural school. She taught in Johnson and Portland Townships for 2 1/2 years. On Dec. 20, 1942, she married Army PVT. Kenneth Port in Oakland, Calif., and then accompanied Kenneth to various military bases where he was stationed before being sent overseas in World War II. After Kenneth's discharge in 1946, they moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., where their sons Dale and David were born.

In 1956 they moved to Akron. Carol was a homemaker until 1967 when she began working at the Akron Post Office as postal clerk. In 1980 she was appointed Postmaster, serving until her retirement in 1986.

She was a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church, holding various offices and was a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was a member of the Akron Senior Citizen Center, the Care Center Auxiliary, Home Culture Club, Akron Library Reading Group, & Ladies Pinochle Club. She led current events at the Akron Community Care Center for 7 1/2 years.

Carol is survived by two sons, Dale and his wife Donna of Moseley, Va., and David and his wife Deborah of Naples Fla; four grandchildren Nathan Port, Jennie French and her husband Ashley, Aaron Port, and Kenan Port, two great-granddaughters Audrey Port and Carlee French; and brother Don and his wife Mary McElhaney of Cape Coral, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth; infant daughter and two brothers, Lloyd and Ken.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Carlsen Funeral Home, Schroeder Chapel in Akron with the Rev. Tanya Sherrill of the Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation will be from noon until service time Tuesday afternoon at the funeral home.
