Donald Udell, 72, of rural Hinton, died Monday, May 10, 2004, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City.
Donald Blaine Udell was born Dec. 25, 1931, in Sioux City, the son of Ralph and Leora (Watje) Udell. Don was raised on the farm east of Leeds. He attended country school and later graduated from Leeds High School in 1950. Don had served his country during the Korean Conflict in the United States Marines.
On Sept. 14, 1958, Don and Deloris Jutting were united in marriage at Watertown, S.D. The couple settled on the family farm in Perry Township where they farmed and raised cattle for 45 years.
Don had served on the Plymouth County Fair Board for several years, at which time he assisted with the moving of the historical round barn to its present location on the fairgrounds. Don loved the land and raising cattle. He always enjoyed sports, particularly watching his children and in later years watching his grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing cards with his family and going fishing.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Deloris of rural Hinton; four children, Bret and Becky Udell and their children, Mitchell and Madison of Hinton, Pam and Mark Johnson and their children, Matthew and Bradlay of Maurice, Jodi and Bill Schindel and their children, Jamie and Brandi of Hinton, and Lori and Barry Kounkel and their children, Sidney and Joel of Sloan; his mother, Leora Udell of Sioux City; a sister, Caroline and Tom Rentel of Hinton; a brother, Glen and Marilyn Udell of Hinton; and several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Udell.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Hinton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jason Gutzmer officiating. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with a 7 p.m. prayer service Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Norm Newberg, Virgil Newberg Jr., Devin Winters, Justin Miller, Larry Barkley and Mike Frerichs.
