SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- Dorothy A. Hauswirth, 72, of South Sioux City passed away Thursday, April 10, 2003, at her residence following a courageous battle with cancer.
A memorial mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Dan Wittrock officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 5 p.m. today, with the family present 3:30 to 5 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mrs. Hauswirth was born Aug. 28, 1930, in Kingsley, the daughter of Joseph and Kathryn (Schierholt) Frericks. The family moved to the Remsen, Iowa, area where she was raised and attended St. Mary's Catholic Schools, graduating in 1948. Following high school graduation, she attended beauty school in Sioux City. After completion of beauty school, she returned to Remsen to work and eventually operate her own beauty shop.
She married Boyd Hauswirth on Feb. 24, 1956, in Luverne, Minn. They made their home in Remsen until 1970, when they purchased El Charmido Lounge in South Sioux City and moved there. They owned the operated the lounge until their retirement in 1992. Boyd passed away on March 13, 1996.
Mrs. Hauswirth was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. She enjoyed playing cars, gardening, crossword puzzles and shopping, but her biggest joy was her children and grandchildren.
Those left to cherish her memory are two sons, Pat Hauswirth and his children, Katie and Patrick, and Tim and his wife, Sheila and their children, Timothy, Alex and Blake, all of South Sioux City; a daughter, Jami Johnson and her husband, Brian and their children, Jessi and Shay of Sergeant Bluff; three sisters, Muriel Meneely and her husband, Bob of Remsen, Shirley Scholer and her husband, Nick of Algona, Iowa, and Pat Johnson of Burlington, Iowa; a brother, Richard Frericks and his wife, Margie of Remsen; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers-in-law, Dan Johnson and Everett Hauswirth; and two sisters-in-law, Florence Hauswirth and Lou Ellen Welsh.
Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Katie Hauswirth, Timothy Hauswirth, Alex Hauswirth, Patrick Hauswirth, Blake Hauswirth, Jessi Johnson and Shay Johnson.
