Martha J. Goebel, 89, of Shawnee Mission, Kan., formerly of Sioux City, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, in Shawnee Mission following a brief illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Paul Spaulding officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Mrs. Goebel was born Sept. 24, 1915, in Plymouth County, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Inga (Sanvold) Haugen. She grew up and resided in the Siouxland area and graduated from East High School in Sioux City.

She married Ralph Goebel on April 3, 1937, in Sioux City. She was employed as a clerk with the Department of Motor Vehicles. Mr. Goebel died May 24, 1971, in Sioux City.

She was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church. She enjoyed cleaning her home, yard work, conversing with family and friends, crossword puzzles and sports.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Janice (Goebel) and Jack Southwick of Overland Park, Kan.; three grandchildren and spouses, Diane Southwick and Scott Cotter, Debra and Wayne Cotter and Bradley and Dee Dee Southwick; five great-grandchildren, Madison Southwick, Elijah Southwick, Mitchell Alexander, Lindsey Alexander and Keaton Alexander; two great-stepgrandchildren, Devin and Danielle Molloy; a brother, Martin Haugen of Sioux City; a sister, Margaret Bevor of Sioux City; and a sister-in-law, Vera Haugen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters; and seven brothers.
