Myrtle K. Braun, 102, of Le Mars, died Sunday, July 20, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Society-Le Mars in Le Mars.

Myrtle K. Schindel Braun was born March 6, 1906, in Plymouth County, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Weinrich) Schindel. She was a lifelong resident of Plymouth County. Myrtle graduated from Hinton High School in 1924. She earned a teachers certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, and taught in rural schools for a number of years.

She married Clarence P. Braun Aug. 11, 1927. Myrtle and Clarence farmed west of Le Mars until 1956 and moved to Le Mars where they operated a service station. At that time they joined Calvary United Methodist Church. In the '50s and 60s, she was an employee of Fry Jewelers, Le Mars. Myrtle retired after working as a supervisor in Westmar College's mail room for 18 years.

Myrtle was a member of the United Methodist Church of Le Mars. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women and the Martha Circle. She was an avid knitter, crocheter and pinochle player. She was an active 4-H leader and volunteer and served as Plymouth County 4-H Chairman for several years.

Survivors include a daughter Elizabeth (Betty) Hesse of Le Mars; three grandchildren Alan Hesse and family of Walpole, Mass., Sharon Russell and family of Sergeant Bluff, and Michelle Wiersma Hill and family Cocoa, Fla.; six great-grandchildren; a daughter in-law Barbara Braun of Le Mars; and Tony and Della Brouillette, faithful friends of Le Mars.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband who died Oct. 20, 1966; her son William; two sisters Hazel Husted and Sibyl Rubel; two brothers Ralph and Albert Schindel; a daughter-in-law Elizabeth (Heinrich) Braun; and a son-in-law Marvin Hesse.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church of Le Mars. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The family will be present from 6 to8 p.m. and there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral on Friday.
