BENJAMIN CLAGG
Funeral services for Benjamin Thomas Clagg, well-known LeMars businessman were held today, December 14, 1959, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in LeMars. Rev. Al Kinrade officiated and burial was in the city cemetery under direction of the Luken Funeral Home.
Mr. Clagg was born January 11, 1880, at Fort Dodge. H was 79 years of age and had been hospitalized for five days at Sacred Heart hospital where he passed away. He had suffered from a heart condition and had suffered from pneumonia.
He came with his parents to LeMars when he was a child. His parents, Mary Elizabeth Gideon Clagg and William M. Clagg were early day LeMars residents.
Mr. Clagg will be remembered in recent years as having been the proprietor of the Candy Box in the location of the present Koenig Insurance Agency. After serving in the Spanish-American War, he operated a hide, wool and fur business in LeMars with his father. He also was an employee of the Gus Pech foundry for many years and at the time of his death was employed as bookkeeper for the Pecks Electric Co. here.
He was united in marriage with Effie Jones on August 15, 1906, at the First Baptist Church. The coupled celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1956.
Deceased was a member of the Giblem Masonic Lodge and the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. James (Evelyn) Hoyt and a son, William, all of LeMars.
Casketbearers were: Arnold Coppock, Leslie Pecks, Earl Johnson, Jack Tindall, Albert Herzig, and William Foster.
