Lloyd F. Harpenau, 72, of Remsen. died Friday, July 18, 2008, at Alegent Health Bergan Mercy Medical Center in Omaha, Neb.

Lloyd was born June 13, 1936, in Le Mars, the son of Anthony and Loretta (Warborg) Harpenau. He was raised in the Le Mars area until 1941, when he moved with his family near Remsen. He received his education at St. Mary's Catholic School from which he graduated in 1954. He served in the U.S. Army from Nov. 16, 1955, until Aug. 16, 1957, and was stationed in Germany, and then was transferred to Co. A, Army National Guard, being honorably discharged Oct. 31, 1961. After his active duty, he returned to the Remsen area and was engaged in farming.

On June 13, 1959, he married Janice Kemp at Le Mars. They made their home near Remsen, where they were engaged in farming. He retired and moved into Remsen in April 2005. Throughout the years he worked part-time for Dave Sonnichsen Construction and from 1993 until the present for Fisch Funeral Home.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Remsen, a communion distributor, church lector, altar server trainer, member of St. Mary Cemetery Board, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Garrigan Council and financial secretary of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 220, Oktoberfest Singers and Pork Producers. He was a past member of St. Mary Church centennial committee, Remsen town centennial committee, Remsen J.C.'s, chairman of St. Mary all-school reunion, Cub Scout Master and Boy Scout Leader.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Janice of Remsen; three daughters and their husbands, Lisa and Brian Hodkinson of Seattle, Wash., Katie and Damon Koontz of Remsen, and Ann and Brian Gress of Omaha, Neb.; two sons and their wives, Chuck and Tammy of Salix and Dennis and Deb of Alton; 13 grandchildren; two sisters and their husbands, Florine and Duane Majeres of Remsen, and Ruth and Steven Heath of Minneapolis, Minn.; two brothers and their wives, Gerald and Marlene and David and Jeanne, all of Remsen; a brother-in-law, Mark Kemp of Atlantic; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; father and mother-in-law, Al and Marie Kemp; and a sister-in-law, Mahala Kemp.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Revs. William McCarthy, Paul Eisle, Timothy Johnson and Donald Slaven officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery at Remsen, with graveside military services conducted by American Legion Post 220 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3328 of Remsen. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today (Monday), with a 3 p.m. parish rosary, a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., and an 8 p.m. rosary by the Knights of Columbus, followed by a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus honor guard and chalice service, at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Casketbearers will be Jeff, Tim and Tony Harpenau, Chris and Peter Heath, Andy Majeres. K.C. honorary bearers will be David Augustine, Richard Boever, Donald Ortmann, Ronald Ruhland, Gilbert Schroeder and Lloyd Wolf.
