Cheryl J. Dickman, 76, of Le Mars, died Saturday, July 5, 2008, at her home following a year-long battle with cancer.

Cheryl Luense was born Nov. 23, 1931, in Elk Point, S.D., the daughter of Carl and Helen (Rosenberger) Luense. In 1932 her mother died of polio, and at the age of one, Cheryl went to live with her Uncle Ben and beloved Aunt Lucille (Rosenberger) Owen in Sioux City. Cheryl attended Sioux City Public Schools, including Sioux City Central High School through her sophomore year. Following her sophomore year she moved to Merrill, where she was reunited with her father and step-mother, Edith (Kelly) Luense. She graduated from Merrill High School in 1949. While in high school, Cheryl worked for her father in the family's restaurant in Merrill. Following graduation, she worked in the accounting office of Metz Baking Company in Sioux City and later at the bank in Merrill.

On April 19, 1950, she was united in marriage to Gene F. Dickman at Brunsville. The couple made their home in Merrill until 1958. At that time, the family moved to Brunsville where Gene opened his locker plant business which the family operated until 1991.

She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church of Brunsville where she was active in the church's women organizations. She was a passionate cook and spent many hours of her life creating baked goods and meals for her family, friends or people in need. Having lived most of her formative years as an only child, she was sensitive to being alone and would frequently open her home to family members or friends who were widowed or alone on a holiday.

She loved music and the opportunity to ballroom dance with her life partner Gene. Cheryl also loved playing cards, cross words and games of all types. But Cheryl saw her true vocation in life as being a loving wife, mother and grandmother and viewed her family as her finest work.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Gene Dickman; four sons, Steve and wife Peggy of Brunsville, Stan and wife Marsha of Le Mars, Scott and wife Lori of Sycamore, Ill., and Stuart and wife Donna of Le Mars; two daughters, Susan Braun and her husband Dwayne and Stacie Faber and her husband Brett, all of Aurora, Neb.; 16 grandchildren: Alex Dickman of Spearfish, S.D., Joe Dickman of Walden, Colo., Anne Dickman of Eagle, Colo., Nick Dickman and Dan Dickman of Brunsville, Ryan Nicholson and his wife Anne of Cedar Rapids, Katie Braun, Jon Braun and Emily Braun all of Aurora, Neb., Maggie Dickman, Drew Dickman, Abbie Dickman of Le Mars and Allie Faber, Paige Faber, Lexie Faber and Dane Faber of Aurora, Neb.; a great-grandaughter, Danielle Nicholson of Cedar Rapids; two brothers, Ben and VerJean Luense of Springfield, Minn., and Jim and Lorrie Luense of Merrill; and a sister, Pat Zoerink and husband Dennis of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a sister-in-law, Doris Brooks of Le Mars and a brother-in-law Don Dickman and his wife Imogene of Merrill, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
