Charles Gilson, 96, of Akron, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Akron Care Center following a brief illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. A.T. Washington officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Sergeant Floyd Post 1973. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Gilson was born May 1, 1906, in Wynot, Neb., the son of Sim and Emma (Cale) Gilson. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He worked for the Council Oak Store in Sioux City for several years. He then worked as a truck driver for Holdcraft for several years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence.

He was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Priestley of Onawa, Iowa, and Donalda and her husband, Gary McCuddin, of Sioux City; a brother and his wife, Bob and Maxine Gilson of Sioux City; two sisters, Katherine Chase and Hazel Brunssen, both of Sioux City; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Delmar; three brothers, Phillip, Raymond and John Gilson; and three sisters, Tillie Copas, Irene Hansen and Mary Gilson.

Pallbearers will be Kyle Wheat, Nate Wheat, Jacob Kelson, Chuck Collison, Joden Napper and Kent McCuddin.
