CAUSE OF DEATH: died following a brief illness
DATE of DEATH: Monday, Sept. 10, 2001
PLACE of DEATH: at Floyd Valley Hospital, LeMars
DATE of BIRTH: March 16, 1916
PLACE of BIRTH: on the family farm in Elgin Township, Plymouth Co., near Struble, Iowa
PARENTS: the son of Henry and Mayme (Franklin) Groetken
SPOUSE & DATE of MARRIAGE: Mildred Harms on Feb. 19, 1938
PLACE OF MARRIAGE: at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, LeMars, Iowa
OCCUPATION: They farmed near Struble for many years. He owned and operated Groetken Trucking and the Struble Elevator. In 1968 they moved their family into LeMars, but continued operating the farming, trucking and elevator businesses. Mrs. Groetken died July 19, 1997. He still continued to go to his office every day, right up to his last illness.
SURVIVORS: include three daughters, Phyllis Gamage of Indianapolis, Ind., Shirley Peterson of Mitchell, S.D., and Debra and her husband, Scott VanDenBerg of Struble; a son, Phil Groetken Jr., of Kansas City, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ed and his wife, Marilyn Groetken of Phoenix, and Henry “Heine” Groetken of Sioux City; three sisters, Rosemary Deegan of Struble, Edna Groetken of Sioux City and Mary Alice and her husband, Bill Wiley of Milwaukee, Wis.
PRECEDED in DEATH by: his parents; two children, Jim and Barbara; and a grandson.
PLACE of BURIAL: LeMars Calvary Cemetery
