SOPHORNIA C. HUMMEL

AKRON, Iowa—Sophornia Clementine Hummel, 88, of Richland, S.D., died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999, at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls following a brief illness.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Westfield Congregational United Church of Christ in Westfield, Iowa, with the Rev. Steve Jewett officiating. Burial will be in Westfield Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.

Mrs. Hummel was born July 27, 1911, in Akron, the daughter of Allie and Bertha (Lovell) Mount. She attended country school in the Akron area.

She married Lynn Hummel on Nov. 21, 1930, in Dakota City. The couple moved to the Elk Point, S.D., area in 1956. He died Jan. 6, 1976.

She was a member of Westfield Congregational United Church of Christ and enjoyed quilting, playing cards and puzzles.

Survivors include three daughters, Mavis Klein of Elk Point, Nettie Dunham of Alcester, S.D., and Marion and her husband, Guy Ross, of Westfield; three sons and their wives, Arnold and Wilma of Westfield, James and Caroline of Paxton, Ill., and Robert and Laurel of Hartselle, Ala.; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 11 great great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Manuel and his wife, Dorothy of Sioux City and John Mount of Chioko, Minn.

She was preceded in death by three granddaughters; a great grandson; three brothers, Pete, Billy and James; a sister, Bertha Green; and two sons-in-law, Ronald Klein and Robert Dunham.

Pallbearers will be Richard, Alan and Randall Hummel, Thomas Dunham, Anthony Klein and Randy Kjose.

NOTE: The deceased was known by her middle name, Clemantine, which is the name engraved on her portion of the joint tombstone with her husband.
